The Sumo wrestlers are objects found near the entrance of the Flesh Tunnels, fighting in an arena with banners hanging overhead. The scene is a life-sized depiction of a kamizumo ("paper wrestling") match, a Japanese children's game in which two paper doll sumo wrestlers are placed on a flat surface and made to move through vibrations created by tapping the side of the dohyō ("arena").

Spawn Mechanics[]

The sumo wrestlers are special objects with a complicated spawn system, which is significantly dependent on Day Type mechanic.

Type A1, Type B2: A single sumo wrestler will be found standing on the ring, completely still. Depending on player's previous actions, the wrestler will be either "aggressive" or "defensive".

The sumo will continue to stand unmoving on the arena until the player approaches it and an event trigger activates. Briefly after the trigger activation, the "aggressive" or "defensive" status of the wrestler is revealed: an "aggressive" sumo wrestler will suddenly leave the ring and run towards the player, which will force link the player to the Monument Park. A "defensive" sumo wrestler will change it's position on the ring rapidly and then will dodge the player's approaches. It is still possible to catch a "defensive" sumo wrestler and link with it.

This single sumo wrestler can only be seen once per dream on your first visit to the Flesh Tunnels. When revisiting the location, the ring will be empty. The single sumo wrestler will exist for 1800 in-game timer units (approximately 1.5 real-life minutes), then disappear. The wrestler will also disappear if the player leaves to continue into the Flesh Tunnels.

Type B1, Type A3: These day subtypes contain no sumo wrestlers at all.

Type A2, Type B3: Two sumo wrestlers can be seen fighting with eachother in the arena. Depending on player's previous actions, one or both of the sumo wrestlers may change size after bumping into each other.

There are a few different outcomes for their fight: though it is possible they may continue to fight until the end of the dream, one of the sumo wrestlers may occasionally emerge victorious. In rarer cases, both sumos can defeat eachother, leaving both lying on their backs within the arena. These versions of the sumo wrestlers can be seen any number of times per A2- or B3-type day dream.

Speculation[]

In Japan, sometimes children who accidentally catch their parents having sex are told that they were only "playing sumo". The sumo wrestlers' proximity to the Flesh Tunnels, an obvious allusion the the womb, seems to imply the protagonist is subconsciously experiencing repressed or unwanted memories that are sexual in nature.

Trivia[]

  • Walking into the ring while both sumos are present will teleport the player to another part of the Flesh Tunnels.
  • Walking around in different parts of the Flesh Tunnels will sometimes teleport the player to the sumo ring.
  • The "aggressive" sumo wrestler moves even faster than the player, and will chase them even through walls until the player is caught or links away.
  • Walking into the Flesh Tunnels through transition hallway from the Pit & Temple will trigger the "aggressive" or "defensive" actions from a single sumo wrestler, if present. This occurs because the player is automatically made to walk into the trigger upon entry.
