A comparison of two different texture sets: Static / Normal (top) and Dynamic / Kanji (bottom) in the Violence District.

In LSD: Dream Emulator, textures are applied to surfaces of every Location after Linking. The game's algorithm select an available texture-set on area transition using the current generation data.

Descriptions of each texture[]

Static (Normal): Ordinary textures; a baseline of how things are "supposed" to look.

Dynamic (Kanji/Logic): Kanji symbols writing will appear on most, if not all surfaces and objects. Some texture's colors become oversaturated and change a lot. Smaller textures will just have a single character of kanji, often naming the object or describing it, while walls have entire rows of text. Most of this writing comes from Hiroko Nishikawa's dream journal.

Downer (Evil): Most objects will take on an eerie red, warped appearance. Cartoony large eyes will appear on most faces.

Upper (Sexual): Most objects take on vibrant shades; images of lips, faces, and Japanese models are layered on some walls and objects. In some areas, this includes textures reminiscent of Happy Town.

Unintentional textures[]

Glitch: A rare bug where the game fails to change texture sheets after linking from one location to another, which happens after the generation algorithm failure. Garbage data and assets from completely different sections mostly overtake this. Using a memory editor to set the in-game timer to an absurdly high value will reliably cause the glitch to happen. Texture Cycle[]

Textures operate in 40-day cycles: Every ten days, a new texture will be added to the pool of available ones.

  • Static textures will always appear.
  • Dynamic ( kanji ) appears after the first 10 days of the 40 day cycle.
  • Downer appears after the first 20 days of the 40 day cycle.
  • Upper appears after the first 30 days of the 40 day cycle.

After day 40, the cycle will be completely reset: Only Static textures will appear until day 50, where Dynamic textures will be readded, etc...
